A message from Carlo
I have known playwright Stephanie Alison Walker for 6 years. I worked on readings of her plays AMERICAN HOME and THE ART OF DISAPPEARING. I've always found her writing to be very immediate and real. When I first moved to Austin, one of the first acting gigs I received was to do a reading of THE MADRES as part of the National New Play Network Showcase. The story of the play was important then, but after working on the script during the course of this production and considering the current political climate of the United States, I can not help but find THE MADRES to be even more important now. It's easy to sweep away and distance oneself from the mistakes of the past, but it's when we bring those mistakes to the light and tell the stories that need to be told, it's then that we can find the power to move our world closer to what is fair and just. I find everything to be shades of gray in THE MADRES, it's complicated, it's layered, it's dangerous and it's real.
