About Cathy/Joe

Cathy Dresden, “America’s big hearted songbird of the 1950s” is a comedic girl singer with a dash of Debbie Reynolds, a sprinkling of Rosemary Clooney, and a dab of Ethel Mertz (of I Love Lucy fame). She was created and is embodied by by actor/singer/writer Joe Hartman. Joe was raised in Round Rock, and spent some of his favorite years living and performing in Austin where he was seen in musicals including Guys and Dolls, Annie, My Favorite Year, and When Pigs Fly, as well as roles in The Beard Of Avon, Quills, and The Casket Of Passing Fancy. He has often performed in drag roles like The Virgin Sacrifice in Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, Miss Bible Belt in Pageant, and for his critically acclaimed performance as Linda The Chicken for Shrewd’s multi-award winning production of Milkmilklemonade.

Joe first dreamt up the ever plucky Cathy Dresden for his one-man show Overwhelming Underdogs which debuted in Austin. Since he moved to New York in 2015, Cathy has taken on a life of her own. In 2016, Joe performed as Cathy during a holiday benefit and was approached by a producer who offered to finance the creation of her first show Cathy Dresden: An Old Fashioned Girl, which opened at Manhattan’s Metropolitan Room and has since played Don’t Tell Mama and the East Village supper club Pangea.
